🌊 Whale Shark Qatar – An Unforgettable Nature Experience in the Arabian Gulf
Book an exclusive journey with Discover Qatar from 20 June – 19 September 2025
If you’re a nature lover, marine life enthusiast, or an adventurer at heart, then experiencing the Whale Shark Qatar expedition must be at the top of your travel bucket list. Every year, from April through September, a breathtaking natural spectacle unfolds just off Qatar’s northwest coast – hundreds of majestic whale sharks gather in the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf.
These gentle giants, the largest fish species in the ocean, visit the Al Shaheen region, lured by nutrient-rich waters filled with plankton and fish eggs. For those lucky enough to witness them, it’s like stepping straight into a scene from a National Geographic documentary.

🐋 Why Is Qatar So Special for Whale Sharks?
Qatar is home to one of the world’s largest gatherings of whale sharks.
Yes, you read that right – over 600 individual whale sharks have been identified in Qatar’s waters, making this a world-record holding location for whale shark sightings.
So, why Al Shaheen?
- Unique Ecosystem: While summer sea temperatures in the Gulf range from 32–34°C, the waters near Al Shaheen remain cooler (around 27°C), making it ideal for fish breeding.
- Whale Sharks’ Favorite Food: These cooler waters are teeming with fish eggs, the favorite meal of whale sharks, drawing them to the area in massive numbers.
Until recently, this area was restricted to the public, so very few people in the world have had the chance to see these incredible animals up close—until now.
